Minutes – Meeting August 2. 2016

The WRARC held it’s monthly meeting at the Red Cross building in Danville.

The meeting was called to order at 7:29pm by president John Montgomery. Those attending were: KG4UQL, KE4SHC, WQ4Z, KE4INO, KM4FRM, KU4KD, KM4TPW, KM4OLL, K4OH, KB4UPW, W9WA, K4FT, K4UKB, KA4SWT, KJ4ND and visitor Roger Cartsa.

John asked Chris to read the minutes from the July meeting. Chris read the minutes from July that Sharon prepared since he has been gone. Marshall made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Joel 2nd the motion. All members approved.

John asked Ken for a treasury report. Ken gave the treasury report. John Wulf made the motion to accept the report. Bill Waldschmidt 2nd the motion. All members approved.

— OLD BUSINESS —

Field Day: no discussion

Repeater Chunking: no discussion. Marshall said he had heard some noise around noon today but not major.

Tower and Antenna:

Sharon said it’s time to do something about this issue so Marshall can get to using his trailer again. John Wulf said it can come to his house to be stored. Marshall said what time tomorrow (Wednesday) do you want to do it. John said 10am would be good so some members were going over to help as this tower is heavy.

Field Day Pics:

John asked if Sharon had sent Marshall pics so they could be put on web site. Sharon was not sure but thought so. Marshall said he had gotten pics from Bill and Sharon he thought and are up on web page.

Test Session:

John Wulf reported that 5 people came to the test session and all passed. 3 tech and 2 general. The next test session will be OCT 22 here at the Red Cross Building. John also said the next event is the North American QSO Party will be Aug 20th at the clubs radio station starting at 2pm.

— NEW BUSINESS —

Marshall said that if members did not know the Dayton Hamvention will be held at a different location in 2017. Xenia OH fair grounds and expo center. Marshall said he had gotten an email from a gentleman in Lexington to add the KY net to our links page on the web site. He has done this.

Bill said he was going to put the tower and antenna on Swap QTH but wanted to make sure it is still ok. John said yes go ahead and list it. Bill said do the contacts listed on the email giving the details on the equipment need to be changed since it is being moved. Chris said to put John Wulf as contact since it will be at his location.

David AG4MW brought in some more items from Bob Sowders estate so if any members would like to have.

John said he has been playing around with Baluns and has made two different kinds. Testing these and will be giving updates how they work.

John Wulf made the motion to close the meeting. Joel 2nd and the meeting closed at 8:04pm

The next meeting of the WRARC will be September 6th 2016

The before meal will be at Cheddar’s next to Wal Mart. Starting around 6pm

Don’t forget Aug 20th QSO party 2pm at club station.

Minutes – Meeting July 5. 2016

The regular meeting of the Wilderness Road Amateur Radio Club was held at the American Red Cross building in Danville on July 5, 2016. The meeting was called to order by the club president, John Montgomery, K4OH at 7:30 pm. Amateur Radio operators present at the meeting included: George Griebe, WQ4Z, Sharon Griebe, KE4INO, Marshall McElfresh K4UKB, Mike May KF4FMQ, Doug Collins KA4SWT, John Montgomery K4OH, Ken Douglas KM4FRM, Marty Montgomery KE4SHC, Peter Rock KJ4ND, Bill Waldschmidt W9WA, John Wulf, K4FT, Justin Perkins, KI4SXS, Don Stivers KM4OLL, Juerg Weidmann KK4JW,and Merl Montgomery KG4PIF.

Sharon, KE4INO read the minutes from the June 2016 meeting. Bill W9WA made a motion to accept the minutes and Marshall K4UKB seconded the motion. Ken Douglas KM4FRM gave the treasury report. A check was written to George Coomer KM4QOY for $50.00 to help cover Field Day Dinner expenses. Check has not been cashed as of club meeting so balance remains the same. Sharon KE4INO made a motion to completely pay back George Coomer, KM4QOY, for the dinner expenses. Bill Waldschmidt seconded the motion. The motion was voted on and passed to pay George Coomer KM4QOY the total bill.

Old Business

Field Day was discussed and it was decided that it was a total success. There was plenty of good food and plenty of radios. The computers John K4OH brought all worked great. The generator put out plenty of power and not much noise. The back up generator was not needed.They used the new N1MN plus version for logging and everyone was happy with it. It was decided to use this all the time in contests so everyone could learn and be familiar with the program. John Montgomery, K4OH, gave a short speech on how he had hooked all the computers up with the internet from his home for Field Day. He used four routers and they had 2.4 gig wifi with a steady signal.

New Business

It was discussed about the repeater chunking. No definite answers were given.

Marshall K4UKB said it is time that we must do something with the antenna on his trailer. Mike May will go look at it and see if he can get it in his barn. Juerg KK4JW was interested in the antenna if the price was quite a bit lower.

New meeting places were discussed. No definite plans were made. There is a possibility that the radio station could be set up in the trailer.

Sharon, KE4INO, will send Field Day pictures to Marshall.

The next VE session is July 23, 2016. They will have the new extra class exams.

August 20, 2016 is the North American QSO party at 2:00PM at the clubroom.

Marshall made a motion to close the meeting and Bill Waldschmidt seconded the motion and the meeting closed at 9:00PM.

Minutes – Meeting June 7. 2016

The meeting was called to order by the club president, John Montgomery, K4OH at 7:35 pm. Amateur Radio operators present at the meeting included: George Griebe, WQ4Z, Sharon Griebe, KE4INO, Edward Durham, KT4HR, Marshall McElfresh K4UKB, John Lewis WD4LEW, Ron Skelton W6W0, Mike May KF4FMQ, Bernie Hunstad KN4WTP, Doug Collins KA4SWT, Joel Haberman KU4KD, Zenah Teater KK4IYY, David Pleasants KM4PDI, John Montgomery K4OH, Ken Douglas KM4FRM, Marty Montgomery KE4SHC, Peter Rock KJ4ND, George Coomer KM4QOY, Roger Parson KG4VER, and Bill Waldschmidt W9WA .

Sharon, KE4INO read the minutes from the April 2016 meeting. Joel KU4KD made a motion to accept the minutes and Ed Durham KT4HR seconded the motion. Ken Douglas KM4FRM gave the treasury report. A check had been made out to Sharon KE4INO for bills which included insurance, and the annual incorporation papers and other bills. Marshall K4UKB made a motion to accept the treasury report and Bill W9WA second the motion.

Old Business:

During the last contest held up in the clubroom there were 5 amateurs that competed.They used the new software and sent the ADIF files to John. Ed Durham KT4HR, Marty Montgomery KE4SHC, Juerg Weidmann KK4JW, John Montgomery K4OH, and John Wulf K4FT. They also checked out all the computers for Field Day and repaired any that were not working properly.

Final plans were made for Field Day. The Field Day will be at the R R Donnally Clubhouse on Stewarts Lane. Mike May will bring his generator. Joel Haberman and George Coomer also have generators if they need to use them. Doug Collins, John Montgomery, Marshall McElfresh, John Wulf, will all bring radios including the club radio. The club will be running 3A . We will be doing single sideband, cw, VHF and have a GOTA station. John Montgomery will bring antennae. George Coomer will check around town to find out if we can get chicken and sides donated for 25-30 people. If not, then a charitable reduced cost for same and reimbursement to George if it costs more than $ 50. Sharon Griebe will take care of lunch providing pizza, pop, cookies, chips, paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware, etc. Set-up for Field Day will start at 8:00 am.

In other business George Coomer has picked up the clubs trailer from Marshall McElfresh.

New Business:

Marshall said the repeater site needs to be checked to make sure everything is running alright.

John Montgomery has talked to Chris Galbreath regarding the Red Cross Building contents. Chris tagged several items with blue post-it notes and has talked to Bill Sammons regarding the building. According to Ruth Ann the new drug program is not a 24 hour business. Doug Collins and Ed Durham will come to the Red Cross building tomorrow to seek information. George Griebe, repeater trustee will receive a key to the repeater site.

Bill Waldschmidt stated that the IT director says they are retiring some XP computers and wanted to know if the club was interested in obtaining any of them. John M said that, yes, the club can use them.

Marshall asked about the antenna they took down and apparently there has not been any interest in it. Chris Galbreath had sent out emails to club members, the Louisville club, and Northern Kentucky with no response. Suggestions were to list the tower on KY HAM, Craigs List or something similar.

Special Program:

A special program was given by Ron Skelton W6WO about Baluns: What they do and how they do it. Bottom line: If you have a dipole fed by coax, put a balun on the coax as near to the antenna as possible.

Bill Waldschmidt made a motion to close the meeting and Peter Rock seconded the motion. Meeting closed approximately 9:15pm.
